About the Tongaat Capital Campaign

100 years ago, a handful of dedicated Dominican nuns employed their bare hands and generous hearts to build the Tongaat campus; buildings that have been home and sanctuary to many thousands of vulnerable youth that Girls and Boys Town have helped to transition to bright and meaningful lives.

But while our purpose is to equip young people with the strength and resolve to S.H.I.N.E.®;  despite the challenges the world has burdened them with, shines in us brightly still; a century of wear and tear has worn our simple walls away.

Today, our Tongaat campus buildings stand condemned and now over 61 years of work that has served to build the strong foundations of so many young may fail too.

Together with the generous help of Boogertman +Partners and other firms who have already rallied to help our cause, we have found an ingenious way to not only preserve KwaZulu Natal history but to serve the future generations of children who so desperately depend on our strong grounding to survive and thrive also.

To take part and support us in this cause, contact our KZN office on 032 943 3189 and speak to Saloshna, alternatively e-mail se@gbtown.org.za.

Message from GBTSA CEO

There can be no doubt that life at GBTSA brings us new challenges every day. Those that are most familiar emanate from our individual youth, their unique responses to our world and their healing process, preparing our staff teams for creative shifts needed in responding to and healing our young and vulnerable girls and boys, maintenance of our buildings and campuses, and so on.

Those that are truly challenging and taxing are those that fall outside of our areas of expertise and training – those of structural building challenges – and fixing those problems! God in his wisdom hands us only challenges that we can manage and so our Tongaat, KZN campus, despite consistent and routine maintenance over the many years, has begun collapsing.

You will thus become aware of our newly launched ‘Tongaat Capital Campaign’ where we are endeavouring to raise the R60-R80 million required to restore our Tongaat campus

According to the engineers, the foundations in many of these buildings were not built robustly enough to securely hold them solidly in place over the past 80 to 100 years – and they have been deemed structurally unsound. You will thus become aware of our newly launched ‘Tongaat Capital Campaign’ where we are endeavouring to raise the R60-R80 million required to restore our Tongaat campus as we continue to care for abused, vulnerable and abandoned young people – and continue your legacy.

Our greatest hope, of course, is that we are able to rely on your regular donations to continue meeting our children’s daily needs of education, food, therapy, and so on – and that you will be able to contribute separately to our fundraising for the ‘Tongaat Capital Campaign’ as we rebuild a safe haven for our youth there.

Therefore, our appeal to you and all of our regular donors is to not shift your funding from direct support of the children to the campaign funding. We would, however, be deeply grateful should you wish to support the campaign over and above your regular donation for our children – as this is an enormous challenge to us, especially in these economic times!

Thank you for always being there for us – and our children. Without your help and partnership we would not be helping and healing our vulnerable children, whose progress and achievements are evident in the pages of this publication.

Kind Regards,
